Ilio-tibial tract contracture in a post-polio case

In a post-polio case, ilio-tibial tract contracture is likely to result in:

A. Extension at the hip and knee
B. Extension at the hip
C. Flexion at the hip and the knee
D. Extension of the knee

Answer is D. Extension of the knee.

Iliotibial tract is involved in the extension of the knee with lateral rotation of the leg. It may also assist in medial rotation of the thigh and abduction of thigh. These actions are mediated by tensor fascia lata which acts through the iliotibial tract.

Tensor fascia lata or iliiotibial tract has no role to play in extension or flexion of the hip.
