Anatomy of inguinal canal

All are true about inguinal canal except:

A. Conjoint tendon forms part of the posterior wall
B. Superficial ring is found in external oblique aponeurosis
C. Deep ring is an opening in transversalis abdominis
D. Internal oblique forms both anterior and posterior wall

Answer is C. Deep ring is an opening in the transversalis abdominis.

Deep inguinal ring is an opening in the fascia transversalis and not in the transversalis abdominis.

Features of the deep inguinal ring are:
  • It is situated about 1.25 cms or half an inch above midinguinal point.
  • It transmits the spermatic cord in males and round ligaments in females
  • Ilioinguinal nerve does not pass through the deep inguinal ring but is a content of the inguinal canal and passes through the superficial inguinal ring.
The ilioinguinal nerve enters the canal not through the deep ring but via interval between the external and internal oblique muscles. Finally, it passes through the superficial inguinal ring along with other contents of the inguinal canal.
